Correspondence of the governor's office. 1951-1955.

Contains the working papers of the governor of Kansas from January 1951 to January 1955, including routine office correspondence among the various offices of state government, and subject matter relevant to the social, economic and political situation of the early 1950s. Like his three predecessors, Governor Arn and his administration were formed around the influence of the post-war world. Arn's tenure in the governor's office took place at a time of upheaval and change at the national and international level. Following World War II, the United States, and Kansas, were experiencing a booming economy, housing shortage, McCarthyism, the Cold War with the Soviet Union, and the Korean Conflict. Dwight Eisenhower, Kansas' favorite son, became the thirty-fourth president in 1952. In Kansas, itself, the famed "Brown v. Board of Education" court case began in Kansas, an event with national implications. In 1953 Gov. Arn oversaw the establishment of a new Department of Administration with broad fiscal and personnel management authority. In 1951 Kansans suffered through the worst flood in its history. This was followed two years later by a severe drought. In 1954 Kansas celebrated its territorial centennial.
